Joe Burns smacks century as Italy defeats Romania in must-win T20 World Cup qualifier
MACRON STORIES
At Macron Sports Hub, we celebrate the spirit of competition and the power of heritage, as Italy takes a significant step towards qualifying for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. Former Australian opener Joe Burns delivered an unforgettable performance, showcasing his skills and dedication in a must-win subregional qualifier against Romania in Rome.
A Century to Remember: Burns' Unbeaten Knock
Joe Burns, eligible to represent Italy through his mother's heritage, made history with an unbeaten 108, the highest score by an Italian player in men’s T20 Internationals. Wearing the number 85 in tribute to his late brother Dominic, Burns smashed four sixes and 12 fours in a dazzling 55-ball innings, becoming only the sixth player to score a century for two different countries in international cricket.
Italy's Commanding Victory
Italy posted an impressive 4-244 after Romania opted to bowl first. The Romanians, facing a formidable target of 245 on a synthetic pitch, were bowled out for 84 in 17.4 overs, as Italy confidently advanced to the next stage of the qualification process.
Climbing the Ranks: Italy's Path to the World Cup
Italy topped the Europe Qualifier Group A standings, securing four consecutive victories during the group stage. Burns emerged as the tournament’s second-leading run-scorer, amassing 211 runs at an average of 70.33. The final round of the European qualifiers will take place next year, where Italy will face strong contenders like Scotland.
A Journey of Heritage and Excellence
Burns, who represented Australia in 23 Tests and six ODIs, brings a wealth of experience to the Italian side. With four centuries and 1442 runs at an average of 36.97 for Australia, his transition to representing Italy is a testament to the enduring connection between heritage and sport.
Looking Ahead
As Italy continues its journey towards the 2026 T20 World Cup, we at Macron Sports Hub are inspired by the dedication and achievements of athletes like Joe Burns. Their stories remind us of the rich tapestry of sports, where heritage, passion, and excellence come together to create unforgettable moments.
